The Bristol service is provided by a team of neuromuscular specialists which includes:
- Two Consultant Neurologists and two Paediatric Neurologists with a specialist interest in neuromuscular conditions
- Specialist Physiotherapists who can provide a knowledge resource for physiotherapy teams across the South West as well as offering physiotherapy review during specialist clinic consultations
- Neuromuscular Advisors who provide support and advice for affected children and adults and their families
- A Specialist Clinical Psychologist who provides a knowledge resource for psychology teams and some direct specialist assessments for over 16s

How to access the service
Referrals to the Specialist Consultants must be made by the patient’s General Practitioner or hospital doctor.

Jo McTiernan
Neuromuscular ODN Co-ordinator
Jo is the Co-ordinator for the SW Neuromuscular Operational Delivery Network. She is based at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. Her role is to coordinate the day to day activities of the network and includes communications with patients across the South West who are registered with the network, informing them of any events that may be of interest, and communications with professionals in the area aiming to improve knowledge of neuromuscular conditions across specialities.
Nicola Doran
Specialist Physiotherapist
Nicola works as the Adult Neuromuscular Specialist Physiotherapist covering the North of the region; she is based at North Bristol NHS Trust but also attends the Taunton and Gloucester outreach clinics.
Dr John Ashworth
Specialist Clinical psychologist
Dr John Ashworth is a Counselling Psychologist with significant experience of working with clients dealing with the impact of living with a long-term health or neurological condition.
He offers psychological support as part of the neuromuscular multi-disciplinary clinics seeing adults for brief therapy to support them with any difficult feelings associated to their health condition, liaising with other mental health services as appropriate.
