Some patients are seen by the local consultant neurologist or rehabilitation team but can still access the specialist neuromuscular physiotherapist and neuromuscular care advisor based at Poole Hospital and carry out review clinics and home visits, as well as attending the consultant-led clinic.
How to access the service
Referrals to the Specialist Consultant and Multidisciplinary Clinic must be made by the patient’s GP or hospital doctor.
Individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of a neuromuscular condition may refer themselves to the Advisor or Physiotherapist. Referrals are also accepted from other health professionals, family members or carers, with the knowledge and permission of the person concerned.

Kathryn Docherty is the Neuromuscular Care Advisor for Dorset. She covers children and adults, providing support and advice to people with neuromuscular conditions, their families and other health and social care professionals. Consultant Neurologist
Dr Miller is a Consultant Neurologist at Hat Hampshire Hospitals and University Hospital Southampton, with a clinical interest in neuromuscular diseases (conditions of peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction and muscle) and clinical trials.
Sunitha Narayan
Neuromuscular Physiotherapist
Sunitha Narayan is a neuromuscular physiotherapist based with the Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton General Hospital. Sunitha has a background in neuromuscular physiotherapy and supports adults with neuromuscular conditions from across Wessex. She helps provide practical support for families affected by muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions.
