MDUK Muscles Matter 2021 – Monday 14 June round-up

A round-up of the MDUK Muscles Matter 2021 myasthenia gravis seminar on Monday 14 June

Our MDUK Muscles Matter 2021 seminars continued on Monday 14 June, virtually bringing together people living with muscle-wasting conditions from across the UK with a seminar on myasthenia gravis.

We were joined in our myasthenia gravis seminar by Consultant Neurologist Dr Fiona Norwood and a recorded video presentation from Clinical Research Fellow Jennifer Spillane. Dr Norwood talked about how researchers have worked to identify biomarkers for the condition and the importance of creating tailored treatments, and Dr Spillane’s video expanded on the latest research into treatments for the condition.

We were then joined by specialist nurse Séana Hughes, Speech and Language therapist Jodi Allen, and Amanda Hayes, who lives with myasthenia gravis, to talk about managing your condition. They discussed how to manage the fatigue and difficulty swallowing by taking each day as it comes, exercising to your capability, being patient with yourself and planning for days where your condition will make it harder to do things.

You can watch the full recording of the myasthenia gravis seminar below or on our YouTube channel.

There will be seminars throughout the year in our MDUK Muscles Matter 2021 online seminar series, including condition-specific sessions, practical sessions such as psychological care and financial support to help you live well, and seminars looking into ways you can manage your condition such as cardiac management or diet and nutrition.
