We were joined by Occupational Therapists Colin Jones and Bea Moon, parent Gerry McMenemy and Jackie Munro MDUK’s Regional Advocacy, Information & Support manager for Scotland.
The panellists spoke about their experience of the housing and adaptations process. Colin and Bea drew upon their experience as senior Occupational Therapists to discuss what support occupational therapy can provide for individuals and families affected by muscle-wasting conditions. Jackie elaborated on the support MDUK can also offer in accessing these services and navigating funding.
Gerry shared his personal experience of the housing adaptation process following his son Somhairle’s diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2017 at the age of 3 ½. He describes the experience as “a crash course in everything from project management, discovering funding, working with good Occupational Therapists, negotiating with local authorities and finding a good builder.”
Following the panellist’s experience there was a discussion with questions from the attendees. All the panellists provided useful insights into matters such as challenging funding or therapy decisions and considerations for including children in the adaptation process.
