New Bespoke FSHD Clinic at Salford Neuromuscular Service

We are pleased to announce the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences have launched a monthly Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSDH) clinic in April 2022.

The clinic will be led by Dr James Lilleker and Philip Kelly. This is a wonderful opportunity for people with FSHD (who are over 16 years) living in Greater Manchester to be seen by a full multidisciplinary team (MDT), including a neuromuscular consultant, a specialist nurse, a physiotherapist, and an orthotist within the same appointment.

Dr James Lilleker, Consultant Neurologist, said:

We are very proud to have started a bespoke clinic for people living with FSHD living in Greater Manchester. This is the second most common muscular dystrophy we see at the Muscle Disease Unit, and it is important that we offer care which addresses the unmet clinical needs in this area. This work also ties into our goal of being 'clinical trial ready' as it is clear that trials of new potential treatments for FSHD are coming soon.

Phillip Kelly, Nurse Specialist and Neuromuscular Care Advisor, said:

This FSHD clinic will go some way to better support people with FSHD and ensure they have improved access to all facets of the MDT including physiotherapists and orthotics. It also gives us as clinicians the opportunity to strengthen our collaborative working to help each other better support this community. We are excited to have gotten this started and look forward to building even more collaborative ways of working to better support people with a muscle-wasting condition.
