Teddy Rooks, 24, from Romford, is taking on the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 2019 for Muscular Dystrophy UK as part of the family fund, Moving Muscles for Marcus. RideLondon is a 100-mile cycling challenge through the centre of London and out into the Surrey Hills.

My little brother, Marcus, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in July 2016. I took part in the London Marathon last year along with four friends and after the marathon hype I didn’t have much motivation to go running again. When I found out about the London Classics medal, which you receive after completing the marathon, RideLondon and Swim Serpentine, I thought I would tackle the second hardest challenge next, cycling 100 miles.”

Teddy hasn’t cycled much since school, but has bought a new bike and is hoping to take part in a few smaller events like London to Brighton during training. When taking part in the London Marathon last year, Teddy raised an incredible £2,900 for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done physically and mentally. It was also the hottest London Marathon on record with some of the coldest training temperatures. I sometimes couldn’t open the door after a run because my hands were so cold!

To reach such a fantastic fundraising total, one of Teddy’s main fundraising ideas was ‘For every £20 you donate, I will run a mile on Christmas Day!”

People were very generous, but also quite cruel as I ended up running a half marathon on Christmas morning! Luckily my cousin came along for company. I am aiming to do the same thing this year but cycling.

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 will take place on Sunday 4 August 2019.

I think it’s good to take part in fundraising challenges as it’s really rewarding to you and also the charity, but the main reason I am taking part is for my little brother, Marcus.

All Teddy’s fundraising will go towards the Duchenne Research Breakthrough Fund. If you would like to sponsor Teddy, please go to his online fundraising page.
