Two Scottish men, two serious 2.6 challenges

Two Scottish men, both living with muscle wasting conditions, have challenged themselves with serious 2.6 Challenges, to fundraise for MDUK.

Powerchair superstar Connor Colhoun has been scoring again for MDUK – while long-time supporter David Gale is walking an incredible 500 miles.

Connor, a Paisley 23-year-old, scored 26 penalties in his driveway on Saturday (May 2) using his Strike Force wheelchair.

He said,

I wanted to do something to support the charity at this time and there’s plenty of room in my driveway at home, so I did a ‘Stay at home challenge’ with no problem at all.

Connor’s positive attitude to living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy was rewarded last June when he met The Queen during tea at the Palace of Holyroodhouse during the annual Garden party.

Diagnosed aged two, from the start Connor has had fantastic support from his mum, Sandra, dad, Kevin and sister Holly, He says that as a family, the fundraising activities they threw themselves into from the beginning helped them adjust really well to the situation.

Connor is passionate about Powerchair Football which he heard about at high school when he was 12. He was at the first ever training session for the sport in Scotland.

David, 36, who has Becker Muscular Dystrophy, is walking an incredible 500 miles in his garden and inside his home, to support MDUK during the COVID-19 pandemic.

His condition is at a stage where this will be a tough challenge for him but he said

I am taking on this challenge as I want to raise much-needed funds to help MDUK get through the lockdown financially. Walking is getting very hard but I wanted to do something that would really push me. I hope my determination will inspire people to give. If we lose our charities it could lead to further strain on the NHS. And there would be nowhere else to go for help and support.

David won the award for Muscular Dystrophy Campaigner of the year in 2011 and The Muscular Dystrophy Scotland Saltire award in 2016. He was also Volunteer of the year at the Diverse Cumbria awards in 2017.

He lives with his wife Tracey and son Spencer in Templand, near Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway. Diagnosed aged five he has been a passionate MDUK campaigner for many years.
